Solid vs. engineered: how installation changes

Nail or staple: commonly used for solid wood and approved engineered products over a suitable wood subfloor.

Glue-down: bonds an approved product to a prepared substrate using a compatible adhesive.

Floating: approved engineered planks connect to one another over underlayment, without fastening to the subfloor.

Product specifications, subfloor condition and moisture testing determine the method. Below-grade rooms need an explicitly approved product and moisture protection.

Concrete prep and moisture testing

A slab that looks dry can still release moisture. Manufacturer-specified tests may include in-situ relative humidity (ASTM F2170) or calcium chloride moisture-vapor testing (ASTM F1869). A handheld meter alone may not satisfy the installation instructions. Test results must meet the chosen flooring, adhesive and moisture-control system’s limits. We also check cracks and flatness, address unsuitable conditions, and select compatible preparation and moisture protection before installation. Floating floors still need approved moisture control.
