Tile Installation Renton WA

Tile installation · Renton, Washington

Waterproofed first. Tiled second.

Renton has two kinds of bathrooms: the ones in Boeing-era ramblers on Talbot Hill and Kennydale, and the ones in townhomes that went up on the hillsides last decade. Different framing, different subfloors — the same rule applies to both. Grout is not a water barrier. We build the bonded assembly underneath, run a 24-hour flood test with photos, and only then open the first box of tile.

How much does tile installation cost in Renton, WA?

Renton tile work bills at $14–$26 per finished square foot, counting tile, setting materials, prep and labor together on one ticket — the labor floor sits at $11/sq ft. Tub-shower surrounds go for $3,200 to $6,800 in standard form, and the complete bathroom — floor, shower, niche — books out between $6,500 and $14,000.

Here is the part that catches Renton homeowners off guard: the shape of the tile matters more than its price tag. Penny rounds at $4 a foot can out-cost a $12 large-format plank on the invoice's labor line, because installers are paid for cuts and grout joints, not for what the tile store charged.

The part you never see

What's behind a shower that lasts

Of the seven layers in a shower, only the top one ever gets seen. When a failed Renton shower gets opened — and we're the ones called to do it — some hidden layer turns out to be absent, the membrane more often than not, omitted once to pocket a few hundred dollars on a build that later demands five figures just to reach that layer again.

Why it matters

Whether the bathroom sits in a 1962 Kennydale rambler or a 2019 hillside townhome, the leak announces itself identically — meaning not at all. Grout waves the water through, the substrate drinks it in, and seasons later a hallway springs underfoot or a shadow crosses the ceiling below the bath. The purchase order by then lists framing, then subfloor, then drywall — and the tile twice.

The waterproofing layer runs roughly ten percent of a shower's price. In any era of Renton house, cutting it is the most expensive line item you can remove.

Which tile, and where

Half the tile regrets in Renton houses started with the right tile in the wrong room. This is the short course we would give you standing in your bathroom doorway.

What it costs you later
Porcelain
$3–$14 / sf
Floors, shower floors, wet rooms, high traffic
Nothing structural — it is the default for a reason
Least maintenance of anything here. Under 0.5% water absorption.
Ceramic

Walls, backsplash, tub surrounds
Floors, and anywhere heavy things get dropped
Chips show the clay body underneath. Cheap to buy, cheap to replace.
Natural stone
$8–$30 / sf
Feature walls, entries, statement floors
Shower floors and kitchen backsplash behind a range
Needs sealing every 1–3 years. Marble etches from anything acidic.
Glass mosaic
$10–$28 / sf
Niches, accent bands, backsplash
Floors — and any large uninterrupted area
Labor-heavy to set, but nothing else holds colour like it.
Zellige / handmade
$14–$40 / sf
Backsplash and walls you want to look alive
Anywhere you want a perfectly flat, uniform surface
Variation and lippage are the point. Budget extra labor, not extra tile.

Schedule

A bathroom, day by day

A typical Renton bathroom takes four to six working days. The two days nobody expects — waterproofing and its overnight test — are exactly why the job lasts.

01
Demo & protection
Floor paths covered, doorways sheeted, negative air on. Old tile, thinset and backer out to bare framing, and the first honest look at the subfloor.
02
Substrate & waterproofing
Rot repaired, backer board set, pre-slope built, membrane bonded and every corner and penetration sealed. Then the flood test goes in and sits overnight.
03
Flood test cleared, tile starts
We photograph the test, drain it, and start setting — layout dry-laid first so cuts land where you'd want them, not where they fall.
04
Tile finished
Walls, floor, niche and edge trim complete. Large format back-buttered, lippage checked as we go rather than at the end.
05
Grout, silicone, done
Grout, then silicone in every change of plane. 24 hours of cure before you use the shower, and we walk it with you before we invoice.

Tile installation FAQ — Renton, WA

How much does tile installation cost in Renton, WA?

+

Installed tile in Renton prices near $14 to $26 the square foot when tile, setting materials, floor prep and labor ride the same ticket; the labor floor sits at $11 per square foot. Figure $3,200 to $6,800 for a tub-shower surround, while the whole-bathroom scope — floor, shower and niche — books out between $6,500 and $14,000. Watch the format above the price tag: mosaic sheets and oversized planks each pull far more labor per foot than everyday 12×12.

How much does it cost to tile a shower in Renton?

+

For the standard alcove in Renton, plan around $3,200 to $6,800 — a figure carrying demolition, the bonded waterproofing build, a sloped pan, the setting labor, a niche and grout. Add benches, a curbless threshold, steam, or stone run full height, and it climbs. About a tenth of it all is waterproofing, and that tenth is what keeps the five-figure tear-out off your calendar.

Do you waterproof showers before tiling?

+

Every time, no exceptions. Behind our tile goes a bonded system — never bare cement board with thinset over it. Pre-sloped base, membrane up the walls, sealed corners, seams and penetrations per TCNA / ANSI A118.10, then the drain gets plugged, the pan filled, and the whole thing sits under water for 24 documented hours before tile day. Tile and grout shed water; only the membrane actually stops it.

How long does a bathroom tile job take?

+

Renton bathrooms typically run four to six working days. Demolition under dust protection comes first; the substrate-and-waterproofing stage follows, overnight flood test included; setting takes a day or two; grout, silicone and trim land at the end. Add 24 hours of cure before the shower's first run. Floors alone tend to wrap inside a day or two.

Porcelain or ceramic tile — which is better?

+

Porcelain, wherever water hits or feet land: the denser body takes on under 0.5% water and laughs off impacts that would chip ceramic. Ceramic still merits walls and backsplashes at its friendlier price. In Renton we spec floors and shower floors porcelain, full stop — the vertical surfaces are where ceramic and glass get to compete.

Can you install a heated tile floor?

+

Yes — an electric radiant mat under the tile adds roughly $11 to $16 per square foot installed, thermostat included. It goes over an uncoupling membrane, gets resistance-tested twice — before and after the tile is set — and draws from a dedicated circuit. The moment to say yes is while the floor is already open; retrofitting means paying for demolition twice.

Do I need to remove the old tile first?

+

Usually, yes. At about $3.50 per square foot including haul-away, demolition is also your only honest look at the subfloor — rot, movement, and where the finished height needs to land at doorways. Tiling over old tile is occasionally fine on a dead-flat, well-bonded surface, but it lifts the floor and buries problems better found now than after grout.

How much does a kitchen backsplash cost in Renton?

+

Near 30 square feet of backsplash in a Renton kitchen bills at $1,100–$2,200 installed, outlet cutouts, edge trim and color-matched grout riding along. Layout is what spends the labor, so mosaics, herringbone, a framed detail at the range and slab-look porcelain taken full height fill out the top of the band.

Can you fix cracked tile or regrout instead of replacing?

+

Often. Starting from $8 a square foot, repair and regrout is right when grout has stained or broken down, when an impact has split one or two tiles, or when a shower corner should hold silicone where grout used to be. It's wrong once the substrate is gone — hollow notes under a tap, loosening that spreads, a wall that flexes — because patching that only rents time. Which case you have, we call before we quote.

Which Renton neighborhoods do you tile?

+

All of them — the Renton Highlands and East Renton Highlands, Kennydale, Benson Hill, Fairwood, Talbot Hill, Maplewood, Downtown, Cascade, Tiffany Park, Liberty Ridge, Rolling Hills, Earlington, President Park, Renton Hill and Skyway — plus neighboring Newcastle, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Issaquah and Seattle.

What warranty comes with tile installation?

+

A 2-year workmanship warranty covers Renton tile work — carpet gets half that term, because tile problems hold off until the second year rather than the first week. Go with a full waterproofing assembly from one manufacturer and that factory's warranty layers over ours. The membrane and flood test photos exist for every job too, ready for the day the house goes on the market.
