Tile installation · Newcastle, Washington
That beige 4×4 from 1994 was never what protected your Newcastle shower — a membrane was, or nothing was. Behind great tile there's either a bonded waterproof layer or a slow $40,000 framing problem in progress. We build the layer, flood-test it for a full day, photograph everything, and then the transformation starts.

Figure $14–$26 a square foot, installed, for Newcastle tile — that pays for tile, mortar and setting supplies, substrate prep and labor, with $11/sq ft the starting labor rate. Plan on the $3,200–$6,800 spread for a tub-shower surround; on $900 to $1,600 for a bathroom floor in the 45 sq ft range; and on $6,500 up to $14,000 for the full floor-shower-niche bathroom.
The counterintuitive part: trading beige 4×4 for large-format porcelain doesn't multiply the price the way people fear. Labor tracks the count of cuts and grout joints, so a $12 large-format plank can actually install for less than a $4 mosaic sheet.
Newcastle figures, August 2026 vintage — labor, materials and tile in one number. Your free estimate ends with the figure that actually counts, in writing.
Seven layers, in strict order from the bottom up. Every failed shower we've opened in a 90s-built home skipped one — the membrane, nearly always — and what saved a few hundred dollars then costs five figures to expose now.
Nothing about a shower leak is loud. Water gets past the grout, loads up the substrate, and two years on announces itself as a springy hallway floor or a stained ceiling downstairs. The remedy at that stage reads like a construction scope: framing, subfloor, drywall, full re-tile.
Waterproofing takes maybe 10% of a shower budget. Strike it out and the remodel quietly becomes a future rebuild.

Starting points only — the format you choose, the substrate we find and the layout's complexity set the final figure, written on site at no charge.
Everything the 90s builder skipped: real pre-slope, bonded membrane, an actual flood test — only after those come the niche, the curb or the curbless entry, then tile. The money goes where drywall hides it.
Kitchens, baths, entries, mudrooms and basement levels. Subfloor flattened before anything else; an uncoupling membrane goes down wherever movement or radiant heat requires one.
Subway to slab-look porcelain, mosaic to herringbone. Outlet openings cut precisely, edges finished, grout chosen against your countertop, not the tile box label.
Electric radiant mat above an uncoupling membrane, resistance-tested twice and given a circuit of its own. The one upgrade that's only rational while the floor is already torn out.
Cracked field tile, tired grout, corners opening up. We'll tell you honestly whether repair solves it or the substrate beneath has already failed.
The old 4×4, its thinset and backer come out under sheeting and negative air, and every bit leaves in our truck. Garage and driveway stay as we found them.
Most dated-looking Newcastle bathrooms aren't wearing bad tile — they're wearing the wrong tile for the room. What follows is the advice we'd give beside your vanity.
Numbers are for material before installation. We arrive with samples and a candid opinion about which are worth their premium.

The on-site arithmetic, moved online: scope, footage, format, prep. It won't replace a quote, but it will anchor your budget.
Four to six working days transforms a typical Newcastle bathroom. The quiet middle two — waterproofing and its flood test — decide whether it lasts.

“They placed plastic sheeting over the cabinets to contain the dust, so we noticed hardly any. The floors look as good or better than new.”
“We chose them because they were professional and top-notch. The work was smooth, fast and cost-effective — such skill and precision!”
“The installers were great! The floor is exactly what we wanted. We worked with OC Flooring previously — highly recommend.”

Installed tile in Newcastle runs $14 to $26 per square foot with everything counted — tile, setting materials, prep on the substrate, labor. Labor starts at $11 per square foot on its own. Figure $3,200 to $6,800 on a standard tub-shower surround and $6,500 to $14,000 for a complete bathroom with its floor, shower and niche. Note that format outweighs unit price: mosaic sheets and oversized planks each take much more labor per square foot than ordinary 12×12 tile.
Tiling a standard alcove shower in Newcastle costs $3,200 to $6,800 — demolition, the bonded waterproofing, a base or pan with pre-slope, the tile, niche and grout are all in it. Go curbless, add a bench, run stone floor-to-ceiling or build a steam shower and the number climbs. About one dollar in ten pays for waterproofing — the cheapest insurance there is against a five-figure failure.
On each and every job, yes. Our tile hides bonded waterproofing behind it, never cement board alone: a pre-sloped base, walls wrapped in an ANSI A118.10-rated membrane (sheet or liquid), each corner, seam and pipe penetration sealed shut, then a full day — 24 hours, photographed — of flood testing before setting begins. Tile and grout never were the waterproofing; keeping framing dry is the membrane's job alone.
A Newcastle bathroom typically needs four to six working days. Demolition and dust protection open the job; substrate work and waterproofing follow, with the flood test holding water for 24 hours; setting runs one to two days; grout, silicone and trim close it out. Add a final 24 hours for the grout to cure before showering. Floors by themselves are a one-to-two-day job.
Anything underfoot or in the spray line gets porcelain — under 0.5% absorption, chip-resistant, traffic-rated. Ceramic stays the smart economy for wall duty and backsplashes. Newcastle remodels from us follow one rule without exception: shower pans and floors wear porcelain, while the walls stay open to ceramic or glass.
Yes. Heated tile adds $11 to $16 a square foot installed with the thermostat in that price, and in a big 90s ensuite it's the difference between a bathroom that looks new and one that feels new. The mat sits over an uncoupling membrane, is checked for resistance before and again after the tile goes down, and takes a dedicated circuit. One rule: do it while the floor is open, or skip it.
Almost always. Removal and haul-away price from $3.50 per square foot, and demo is the only real inspection your subfloor will ever get — rot, movement and finished-height problems at doorways all show up then. Tiling over the existing floor works only when it's flat, solid and firmly bonded, and even then it raises the height and conceals what we'd rather have found early.
Newcastle backsplashes come in between $1,100 and $2,200 installed, at the usual 30 square feet, covering the outlet cutouts, finished edges and grout matched to the counters. Herringbone, mosaic sheets, a framed accent behind the cooktop and slab-look porcelain taken to the ceiling price toward the top — the labor lives in the layout and the cuts.
Often we can. From $8 per square foot, repair and regrout handles stained or failing grout, a cracked tile or two from impact, and shower corners that need their grout traded for silicone. When tile sounds hollow, loosens in a pattern or the wall gives under a thumb, the substrate is done and repairs buy only months. Which one you have gets said out loud before any quote is written.
Homes throughout Newcastle — Hazelwood, China Creek, Newcastle Highlands, Olympus, Lake Boren, May Creek, Coalfield and up the Cougar Mountain flank — plus Newport Hills, Lakemont, Somerset, Factoria, Eastgate, Kennydale and the Renton Highlands, with Bellevue, Renton and the broader Eastside close behind.
Every tile installation is backed by OC Flooring's 2-year workmanship warranty — deliberately longer than our carpet coverage, since tile trouble tends to appear in year two, not week two. Where we install a manufacturer's full bonded waterproofing assembly, their product warranty applies too. The membrane and the flood test are photographed, so the record survives even a future home sale.
