What is dustless floor sanding?

Dustless floor sanding is hardwood floor refinishing done with sanders connected to cyclone and HEPA vacuum systems, so wood dust is captured at the source instead of spreading through your home. OC Flooring uses it on every sand-and-refinish project in Bellevue, Seattle and Everett, with optional sealed barriers and air scrubbing for occupied homes.

Source capture, not a dust cloud

Sanding the old way vs. the OC Flooring way

We use vacuum-connected sanding to capture wood dust at its source and reduce the dust left to clean up. Same beautiful floor, far less mess.

How it works

Our dust-control equipment, step by step

Our sanding machines connect to cyclone and HEPA vacuum attachments that collect wood dust as it is produced. We assess access, room layout and the existing floor before choosing the setup.

01

Vacuum-connected sanders

Every belt and edge sander runs with a cyclone and HEPA filter attachment, so wood dust is pulled away the moment it is created.

02

Sealed collection outside the room

Dust travels to a sealed containment unit kept out of the living space. This is the dust collected from an average hardwood sand-and-refinish project.

03

Barriers and air scrubbing when needed

For sensitive spaces we hang plastic sheeting sealed with non-marking painter's tape and run a BuildClean air scrubber that filters the air in the work area.

Dustless sanding reduces dust; it does not eliminate every particle or the need for normal cleanup. Finish cure times, not dust control, determine when rooms can be used.

Planning dustless floor sanding in Seattle

OC Flooring provides dustless floor sanding for Seattle homes and condos. During an in-home estimate, we inspect the existing wood and finish, discuss repairs and stain choices, and plan dust containment around the rooms you use.

Existing wood and occupied rooms

For fir, oak or other wood floors, remaining thickness and previous sanding help determine whether a full refinish is suitable. Identify loose boards, stains and moisture concerns before sanding. Discuss furniture, pets and access to kitchens or bedrooms when setting the work schedule.

Condo access and containment

For a Seattle condo, confirm the building’s work hours, elevator reservations, loading access and contractor requirements. Standard vacuum-connected sanding is included; plastic barriers and an air scrubber are an optional containment upgrade. We review the layout before recommending the setup.

Ask for an estimate separating repairs, sanding, stain, finish coats and optional containment. Finish drying and curing determine when you can walk on the floor, return furniture and replace rugs; dust capture alone does not determine that schedule.

Compare the broader repair and finish options on our Seattle hardwood refinishing page, or request an in-home sanding estimate.

Why it matters

Three reasons floor-sanding dust is worth controlling

Drum full of collected sanding dust

Less dust to clean

Fine wood dust travels into cabinets, vents and closets. Source capture keeps most of it out of the rooms you are not refinishing.

Hazard sign for airborne wood dust

Lower dust exposure

Vacuum extraction limits airborne wood dust during sanding, which matters for children, pets and anyone sensitive to airborne particles.

Contaminants trapped in a floor finish

A cleaner finish

Dust that settles on wet finish becomes bumps in the final coat. A clean work area and careful preparation shape how the floor looks for years.

Areas we serve

Sandless refinishing

Screen and recoat

Lightly abrades an intact finish before a fresh coat. It refreshes dullness and light surface wear, but it does not remove deep scratches or water damage, and it cannot change the stain color.

Dustless sanding

Full sand and refinish

Full sanding with dust captured at the source. Removes the old finish so suitable wood can be sanded, stained and finished again. Moisture problems are resolved first, and deeply damaged boards may need replacement.

“The installers were great! The floor is exactly what we wanted. They also did the stairs, which were carpet. We worked with OC Flooring previously — they refinished our red oak. Highly recommend!”

“They refinished over 300 sq ft of maple flooring that was 15 years old — the floors look as good or better than new!! They placed plastic sheeting over the cabinets to contain the dust, so we noticed hardly any. Would definitely recommend.”

Dustless Floor Sanding — FAQs

⌄What is dustless floor sanding?

Dustless floor sanding connects sanding machines to vacuum extraction that captures wood dust as it is produced. It substantially reduces airborne dust compared with sanding without source capture, but no sanding process is completely dust-free.

⌄How much does dustless floor sanding cost?

For planning, professional dustless hardwood refinishing is often about $4–$6 per square foot; a 200-square-foot room would be roughly $800–$1,200 before any project minimum, repairs, stain, or extra containment. This is an estimate, not a fixed OC Flooring rate. Conventional sanding and DIY costs vary with equipment, materials, room condition, and cleanup. We provide a written quote after assessing your floor.

⌄Is DIY floor sanding cheaper than professional dustless sanding?

DIY may have a lower upfront cash cost, but include sander rental, abrasives, finish, dust containment, your time, and any correction work in the comparison. Professional dustless sanding includes equipment and labor for source capture and finishing. Compare complete written quotes and the finish system before choosing.

⌄Dustless vs traditional sanding — what is the difference?

Both methods remove old finish and prepare the wood for staining and new finish. Vacuum-connected dustless equipment captures much of the sanding dust at its source, reducing the dust that spreads through the home and the cleanup afterward. Finish quality depends on floor preparation and the products used.

⌄How long does dustless floor sanding take?

Sanding a 200–300-square-foot room may take several hours, while repairs, stain, finish coats, and drying can extend the full job over multiple days. A larger, 1,000-square-foot project may take about 3–5 days or more, depending on floor condition and finish. Follow the finish manufacturer's drying and cure guidance before replacing furniture or allowing pets back.

⌄Is dustless sanding good for allergies or pets?

Source capture and containment reduce the amount of wood dust released during sanding, which can help limit exposure for people sensitive to airborne particles. Some dust can still escape, and stains and finishes have separate ventilation and cure requirements. Keep children and pets out of the work area and tell us about respiratory concerns so we can discuss containment and timing.

⌄Do you use truck-mounted or portable dustless systems?

Truck-mounted extractors can move collected dust outside the work area when access permits; portable vacuum systems can suit rooms with limited access. Our documented setup uses sanding machines connected to cyclone and HEPA vacuum attachments, with optional barriers and a BuildClean air scrubber. We choose the appropriate containment for the property during the estimate; ask us about the exact equipment planned for your job.

⌄Do you offer dustless sanding across the Eastside and Snohomish County?

Yes. We serve Bellevue, Kirkland, Everett, Seattle, and surrounding areas in King and Snohomish counties.

⌄Will my home still need cleaning after dustless sanding?

Vacuum extraction captures much of the wood dust, but small amounts can still settle around the work area. We review containment and cleanup in the project estimate.

⌄Do you provide a warranty on refinishing with dustless sanding?

OC Flooring provides a 1-year workmanship warranty for dustless sanding projects. Review the written agreement for coverage details and any applicable manufacturer finish warranty.

⌄Is dustless sanding the same as sandless refinishing?

No. Dustless sanding removes the old finish and sands the wood using dust extraction. Screen and recoat refreshes an intact, compatible finish without sanding down to bare wood. It does not change the stain color or remove deep damage. Moisture problems and loose or damaged boards need assessment before either service.

⌄Does dust control make the finish cure faster?

No. Dust containment reduces cleanup, but it does not shorten the finish manufacturer's drying or curing time. Ask for separate instructions for walking on the floor, moving furniture back, returning pets, replacing rugs, and cleaning.
