Tile Installation Duvall WA

Tile installation · Duvall, Washington

Waterproofed first. Tiled second.

A Duvall winter keeps a bathroom damp from October to May, and grout was never going to hold that back. The bonded membrane behind the tile is the real waterproofing. We slope the base, seal the membrane, let a 24-hour flood test prove the work — on camera — and set tile only after it passes.

How much does tile installation cost in Duvall, WA?

In Duvall, tile installation prices out at roughly $14–$26 per installed square foot, covering tile, setting supplies, substrate prep and labor — labor on its own opens at $11/sq ft. A standard surround for a tub or shower falls in the $3,200–$6,800 band, and a full bathroom with shower, floor and niche usually totals $6,500–$14,000.

Strange but consistent: the tile's shape outweighs its sticker. Wall time for $4 mosaic sheets can exceed wall time for $12 large-format porcelain — cuts and grout lines are what consume the hours, never the material itself.

The part you never see

What's behind a shower that lasts

There are seven layers in a shower built to last, bottom to top. The leaks we get called about around the valley trace back to a skipped layer — usually the membrane — a few-hundred-dollar shortcut that eventually costs ten thousand to undo.

Grout + silicone
Colour-matched grout; silicone in every change of plane, never grout.

Why it matters

Patience is what makes a shower leak expensive. It seeps behind the grout, loads up the substrate, then spends a year or two invisible before a floorboard softens or the ceiling below blooms. From there the project isn't tile — it's framing, subfloor and drywall rebuilt before a single new tile can go down.

Waterproofing is roughly one dollar in ten of a shower's cost — and skipping it is the most expensive decision a bathroom remodel can make.

Shower & bath tile

Under-tile first, always: pre-slope, then bonded membrane, then the flood test — and only afterward the niche and the curb or curbless entry. The work you can't see is the point.

from $3,200 / shower
Floors

Porcelain & stone floors

Bathrooms, kitchens, mudrooms, entries and basements. The subfloor gets flattened, and an uncoupling membrane goes down anywhere movement or a heat mat demands it.

from $11 / sq ft labor
Kitchens

Backsplash

Subway or herringbone, mosaic sheeting or slab-look porcelain — outlet cuts held tight, edges trimmed to a finish. Your counter picks the grout color; the tile box gets no vote.

from $1,100 / backsplash
Upgrade

Heated tile floors

No upgrade is loved more in the valley: an electric mat over uncoupling membrane, its resistance checked going in and checked again once tiled, powered by a dedicated circuit. Timing rules it — open floor or not at all.

Repairs

Tile repair & regrout

Failed grout, a cracked tile, shower corners opening up. We tell you up front whether repair makes sense or the substrate beneath has quietly failed.

Demo & haul-away

Demo means tile, thinset and backer gone, dust sealed off with sheeting and negative air, and the whole mess hauled. Nothing waits in your driveway for spring.

Material guide

Which tile, and where

Bad tile choices in Duvall homes are rarely bad tile — they're a good tile asked to live in the wrong room. Here's the two-minute version of our on-site advice.

Material
Best for
Avoid
What it costs you later
Porcelain
$3–$14 / sf
Floors, shower floors, wet rooms, high traffic
Nothing structural — it is the default for a reason
Least maintenance of anything here. Under 0.5% water absorption.
Ceramic
$2–$8 / sf
Walls, backsplash, tub surrounds
Floors, and anywhere heavy things get dropped
Chips show the clay body underneath. Cheap to buy, cheap to replace.
Natural stone
$8–$30 / sf
Feature walls, entries, statement floors
Shower floors and kitchen backsplash behind a range
Needs sealing every 1–3 years. Marble etches from anything acidic.
Glass mosaic
$10–$28 / sf
Niches, accent bands, backsplash
Floors — and any large uninterrupted area
Labor-heavy to set, but nothing else holds colour like it.
Zellige / handmade
$14–$40 / sf
Backsplash and walls you want to look alive
Anywhere you want a perfectly flat, uniform surface
Variation and lippage are the point. Budget extra labor, not extra tile.

Prices are for the material by itself, pre-installation. We'll bring samples along and say which ones earn their premium.

Schedule

A bathroom, day by day

Most Duvall bathrooms run four to six working days start to finish. The unglamorous middle two are what keep it dry for decades.

01
Demo & protection
Floor paths covered, doorways sheeted, negative air on. Old tile, thinset and backer out to bare framing, and the first honest look at the subfloor.
02
Substrate & waterproofing
Rot repaired, backer board set, pre-slope built, membrane bonded and every corner and penetration sealed. Then the flood test goes in and sits overnight.
03
Flood test cleared, tile starts
We photograph the test, drain it, and start setting — layout dry-laid first so cuts land where you'd want them, not where they fall.
04
Tile finished
Walls, floor, niche and edge trim complete. Large format back-buttered, lippage checked as we go rather than at the end.
05
Grout, silicone, done
Grout, then silicone in every change of plane. 24 hours of cure before you use the shower, and we walk it with you before we invoice.

Duvall tile installation FAQ

Not here? Call us at (425) 595-1079 — you'll get an installer on the phone, not a call center.

How much does tile installation cost in Duvall, WA?

+

Around Duvall the installed figure runs $14 a square foot on the low side and $26 at the top — tile, setting supplies, substrate prep and labor all in, the labor line alone from $11 a square foot. Standard tub-shower surrounds span $3,200 up to $6,800, and a bathroom finished complete — floor, shower, niche — totals in the $6,500–$14,000 neighborhood. Shape sets cost faster than price does: mosaics and large-format tile both chew through labor quicker than 12×12.

How much does it cost to tile a shower in Duvall?

+

In Duvall, set aside $3,200–$6,800 for an alcove shower of standard size — the figure covers demo, a bonded waterproofing system, a sloped pan, the setting work, a niche and grout. Steam, benches, full-height stone and curbless designs price above that. The waterproofing runs about a tenth of the cost, and it's what prevents the five-figure failure down the road.

Do you waterproof showers before tiling?

+

Yes — and the proof precedes the tile. A bonded waterproofing system goes into each shower: sloped base underneath, membrane run in sheet or liquid form up the full wall, every corner, seam and pipe penetration sealed tight, then a photographed 24-hour flood test before setting begins. Waterproof is a word for membranes, not for tile or grout — the membrane is what stands between shower and framing.

How long does a bathroom tile job take?

+

The honest schedule for a Duvall bathroom reads four to six working days — dust control and demolition take the first, substrate plus waterproofing with its 24-hour flood test take the second, setting fills one or two more, and grout with silicone and trim finishes. The shower stays off another 24 hours while grout cures. Just a floor? One or two days.

Porcelain or ceramic tile — which is better?

+

Where water or traffic lives, porcelain wins: denser body, chips rarely, absorption under 0.5% — worth plenty in a valley bathroom damp from fall through spring. Ceramic serves well at lower cost on walls and backsplashes, the lighter duty. Every floor and shower pan we set gets porcelain; above them, ceramic or glass can do the decorating.

Can you install a heated tile floor?

+

Gladly — heated tile is the best answer to a dark valley morning. Installed, it adds $11 to $16 per square foot including the thermostat. The mat lays over an uncoupling layer, gets resistance-tested on either side of the tile work, and runs on its own circuit. The only affordable moment to add it is while the floor is open, so it pays to decide early.

Do I need to remove the old tile first?

+

Usually. Old tile out and hauled costs about $3.50 a square foot, and it's the only way to actually see the subfloor — checking for rot and movement, and getting the finished height right where floors meet. Tile-over-tile can succeed on a flat, well-bonded, solid base, but it builds up the floor and keeps problems out of sight until they're expensive. We take it out.

How much does a kitchen backsplash cost in Duvall?

+

For Duvall kitchens, the typical 30 square foot backsplash comes in from $1,100 to $2,200 installed, counting outlet cuts, edge trimming and grout matched to color. The swing is cutting time: herringbone, mosaic sheets, a picture-frame detail at the range or slab-look porcelain run full height all push the price toward the ceiling of that band.

Can you fix cracked tile or regrout instead of replacing?

+

Yes, often. From $8 per square foot up, repair-and-regrout handles stained or crumbly grout, the stray impact-cracked tile, and shower corners that ought to carry silicone instead of grout. It stops helping when the base layer has failed — hollow-ringing tiles, a spreading loosening, sponginess in the wall — because a patch there merely delays. Before writing any number we tell you which of the two you're facing.

Which Duvall neighborhoods do you tile?

+

Every part of Duvall — the blocks around Main Street downtown, Big Rock, Cherry Valley, Duvall Highlands and the plats up the hill — plus Lake Marcel, Stillwater, English Hill, Novelty Hill, Redmond Ridge and Cottage Lake. We also tile in Carnation, Monroe, Fall City, Woodinville, Maltby and elsewhere in the Snoqualmie Valley.

What warranty comes with tile installation?

+

OC Flooring's tile warranty is a 2-year workmanship promise — carpet's window is shorter, since tile trouble takes until year two, not week two, to speak up. Full manufacturer waterproofing assemblies bring the maker's coverage along beside ours. Membrane and flood test both get photographed on every job, so when the house someday changes hands the proof travels with it.
