“The installers were great! The floor is exactly what we wanted. They also did the stairs, which were carpet. We worked with OC Flooring previously — they refinished our red oak. Highly recommend!”

“They refinished over 300 sq ft of maple flooring that was 15 years old — the floors look as good or better than new!! They placed plastic sheeting over the cabinets to contain the dust, so we noticed hardly any. Would definitely recommend.”

Hardwood Floor Staining Across the Puget Sound

Change the look of your existing hardwood with a color selected for your home. OC Flooring serves Seattle, Bellevue, Everett and Kirkland, with on-floor samples, careful surface preparation and a compatible protective finish.

Why stain your hardwood floors?

Update the color

Move toward warm brown, pale neutral or a deeper tone while keeping a sound hardwood floor. In Seattle homes, compare samples in both cloudy daylight and evening lighting.

Coordinate your rooms

Choose a tone that works with new cabinets, wall paint or adjoining floors. Sanding removes the existing coating so the new color can be evaluated on bare wood.

Refresh before selling

Refinishing can improve a worn floor’s presentation to buyers. Choose the scope for the floor’s condition and your goals; resale results depend on the home and market.

Dark stain may reduce the contrast of some discoloration, but deep pet or water stains can remain. Damaged boards may need repair or replacement before staining.

Choosing your stain color and finish sheen

Choose the color first, then the sheen of the protective finish. View samples on your wood: species, daylight and the topcoat all influence the final appearance.

Stain color and finish sheen at a glance
OptionThe lookEveryday considerations
Light to medium stainAiry neutrals or warm, natural-looking browns.Often more forgiving of pale dust; test for pink or yellow undertones in your wood.
Dark stainRich contrast with lighter walls and cabinetry.May show lint, pet hair and scratches more clearly; does not erase deep damage.
Matte finishLow reflection with a quiet, natural appearance. Can make small surface marks less conspicuous; still needs routine care.
Satin finishA soft glow that brings out the grain.A useful starting point if you want some reflection without a high-gloss look.

For a busy Seattle-area home, start with light-to-medium color samples and compare matte with satin. Select the protective finish for traffic and maintenance needs; sheen by itself is not a durability rating.

Why homeowners choose us for staining

  • Licensed & insured. Trusted since 2013, with 120+ five-star reviews and a one-year workmanship warranty.
  • Sample first. We test wood floor stain colors on your actual floor before committing.
  • Color change or refresh. Restaining hardwood floors or a full hardwood floor color change.
  • Careful color matching. Test samples help new and existing wood blend; natural variation can prevent an exact match.

Professional staining tools and materials

An even stain starts with consistent preparation. Each stage has a different job:

  • Floor sanders and edgers: prepare the main floor, edges and corners so remaining finish does not block stain absorption.
  • Progressive abrasives and final blending: refine earlier sanding marks and make edge preparation consistent with the center of the room.
  • Dust collection and surface cleaning: remove sanding dust before sampling, staining and coating.
  • Compatible stain, applicators and finish: follow the selected manufacturer’s application and drying instructions. Brushes, pads, cloths or buffer-driven applicators may be specified; one method does not suit every stain.

Ask which stain and finish system is proposed for your project. The written product instructions determine the preparation and applicators, rather than a universal grit or brush rule.

Hardwood floor staining — FAQ

How much does hardwood floor staining cost?
Staining is usually an add-on to a full sand-and-finish project. Our published guide is roughly $0.75–$1.50 per square foot for the stain step, in addition to sanding and protective finish. Wood species, custom color work, repairs, stairs and the floor’s condition affect your written estimate. For example, the stain add-on for 800 square feet would be about $600–$1,200 at that range; this is not the total refinishing price.

For resale context, the NAR/NARI 2022 Remodeling Impact Report estimated 147% cost recovery for hardwood floor refinishing. That historical national estimate covers refinishing as a whole, not staining alone, and does not predict an individual Seattle-area home’s sale price or appraisal.
What stain colors can I choose for my hardwood floors?
Choose from light natural-looking tones, warm mid-browns, Provincial, weathered gray and deep brown or ebony looks. The same stain can look different on red oak, white oak and maple. We prepare samples on your actual floor so you can compare the color with your walls, cabinets and furniture before choosing.
Should I choose light or dark stain, and matte or satin finish?
Light and medium tones generally make pale dust and everyday scuffs less noticeable; dark floors create stronger contrast but can highlight lint, pet hair and scratches. Matte provides a low-reflection look, while satin adds a soft glow. For busy Pacific Northwest homes, start by comparing a light-to-medium color with matte or satin finish. Sheen alone does not determine durability: the finish system, curing and maintenance matter.
Can you change the color of my existing floors?
Yes, if the floor has enough sandable wood remaining. We remove the old coating and work through progressively finer abrasives to remove scratches from earlier passes. A 60 → 80 → 100 grit sequence is one possible example; the starting grit and final preparation depend on the floor, species and stain instructions. Skipping required intermediate steps can leave scratches that become more visible after staining. For example, Bona DriFast’s preparation guidance specifies an 80–100 grit final sanding cut and 80–120 grit MultiDisc preparation. We test the color before applying stain and a compatible protective finish.
Can you match new flooring to my existing stain?
We use test samples and, where appropriate, custom blends to get a close match. Wood species, board age, grain, sunlight exposure and the existing finish can prevent an exact match. Refinishing adjoining areas together may give a more consistent result than staining only the new boards.
Does the wood species affect the stain color?
Yes. Red oak’s underlying pink tones, white oak’s natural color and maple’s tighter grain affect the result. Some species can absorb pigment unevenly. Samples on the actual sanded wood are more useful than a color name or a screen image, especially when choosing a pale or gray tone.
How long does the staining process take?
Plan on several days for a complete sanding, staining and finishing project; a straightforward project may take around 4–5 working days, with additional time where repairs or drying conditions require it. Applying stain is only one stage. Dry-to-touch, light foot traffic, furniture replacement and full cure are different milestones. We confirm the schedule and return-to-use instructions for the specific stain and finish selected.
How durable are stained floors?
Stain changes the wood’s color; the protective finish provides the main resistance to wear and spills. Choose the finish for your household’s traffic, follow its curing schedule, use felt pads and entry mats, and clean with an approved wood-floor cleaner. No wood floor is scratchproof, and a darker color is not a repair for deep damage.
Do you provide a warranty on staining?
OC Flooring provides a one-year workmanship warranty. Any applicable manufacturer coverage for the selected finish is separate and subject to its written terms. Your project documents should identify the products and warranty coverage.
