Vinyl plank is a great choice for your home — if you buy the right plank, because the quality range hiding behind the letters “LVP” is enormous. Three specs separate a 20-year floor from a 5-year regret: the wear layer (buy 20 mil for busy homes), the core type (rigid SPC vs. cushioned WPC), and the locking system. This is the first-time buyer's guide: what each number means, what cheap lines quietly skimp on, and the questions to ask before you swipe the card.
Walk into any flooring store and every vinyl plank box says the same three things: waterproof, durable, easy to install. All true — and totally useless for telling a $2 plank from a $7 one. The difference was almost never the brand on the box. It was three specs most first-time buyers never check. Here's how to read a vinyl plank like an installer.
Three Specs, Decoded
wear layers are measured in mils — thousandths of an inch, not millimeters. A 20-mil wear layer is only about 0.5 mm thick, yet that transparent skin is the single best predictor of how long an LVP floor lasts.
SPC cores are mostly limestone powder bound in PVC — thin, rigid, dent-resistant. WPC cores use a foamed wood-plastic composite — thicker, softer, quieter, warmer. Same waterproof promise, very different floors underfoot.
the independent certification for flooring indoor-air quality — products are lab-tested against strict VOC emission limits. On vinyl, it’s the label worth insisting on, since air quality is the spec no showroom sample can show you.
The Anatomy of a Plank (60-Second Version)
Every LVP plank is a sandwich of four layers, top to bottom: the wear layer — a clear urethane-coated skin that takes all the abuse; the print film — the photographic wood look; the core — the waterproof body that gives the plank its stiffness and stability; and the backing, often with an attached underlayment pad. Marketing focuses on the print film, because that's what sells in a showroom. Lifespan lives in the other three layers.
Spec #1: The Wear Layer — the Number That Decides Everything
When an LVP floor “wears out,” what actually happened is the transparent wear layer wore through — and since vinyl can't be refinished, that's terminal. So this number is your floor's lifespan in disguise:

Here's the trap set for first-time buyers: bargain lines advertise total plank thickness (“8mm luxury plank!”) in big type while hiding a 6-mil wear layer in the fine print. Total thickness affects feel; the wear layer determines lifespan. A thin plank with a 20-mil wear layer will outlast a thick plank with a 6-mil layer every single time.
Spec #2: The Core — SPC or WPC?
Both are waterproof; they're different animals underfoot. SPC (stone-polymer composite) is dense and rigid — it resists dents from furniture and dog claws, bridges small subfloor imperfections, and shrugs off temperature swings, which makes it our default for kitchens, basements, and slab-on-grade rooms. Its tradeoffs: harder and noisier underfoot, and it's the thinner build. WPC (wood-polymer composite) is foamed, thicker, and cushioned — warmer, quieter, kinder to standing knees, lovely in bedrooms and playrooms — but it dents more easily under point loads. And skip flexible glue-down-style planks for DIY-grade floating installs entirely; that category is where the flimsiest product hides.
What Cheap Lines Quietly Skimp On
- Print variety. Quality lines print many unique boards before the pattern repeats; budget lines repeat every few planks, and your eye will find the twins in an installed floor forever.
- Locking edges. Weak, crumbly click profiles are the #1 reason cheap floating floors develop gaps and lifted corners. If sample planks click together with a flimsy, gritty feel in the store, believe your hands.
- Texture and bevels. Premium planks emboss texture in register with the printed grain and micro-bevel the edges; cheap planks are glass-smooth with printed-on “texture” that fools nobody at floor level.
- The attached pad. Good lines bond a real acoustic pad; bargain lines laminate on a token film that does nothing for sound or comfort.
- The warranty's fine print. “Lifetime residential” means little if pet damage, surface wear in traffic areas, or slab moisture are excluded. Read what's excluded, not the big number.
Seven Questions to Ask Before You Buy
- What is the wear layer in mils — not the total plank thickness?
- Is the core SPC, WPC, or flexible — and why is that right for my rooms?
- Does the warranty explicitly cover pets and surface wear, and what voids it?
- Is it FloorScore-certified (or equivalent) for indoor-air quality?
- How many unique print patterns before the boards repeat?
- What subfloor flatness and moisture prep does the manufacturer require — and who's doing that work?
- Can I take two samples home to click together and live with for a week?
A salesperson who answers these fluently is selling you a floor. One who keeps steering back to “it's 100% waterproof!” is selling you a box.
The Install Is Half the Floor
The best plank made still fails over a bad subfloor: click joints separate over humps, rigid cores clack over hollows, and edges peak where floors weren't flattened.
